Vietnam legislative diplomacy and international partnerships

Vietnam’s National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn has engaged in a series of diplomatic meetings aimed at strengthening legislative and economic ties with various international partners.

In early August 2026, Chairman Mẫn met with the U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam, Jennifer Wicks, emphasizing that Vietnam “always regards the United States as one of its top partners.” The discussions focused on increasing legislative exchanges and cooperation in high-technology sectors, including semiconductors, digital transformation, and green energy. During the same period, Mẫn met with Malaysia’s Ambassador Tan Yang Thai to discuss the Vietnam-Malaysia comprehensive strategic partnership, specifically targeting investment in agriculture, oil-gas, and renewable energy.

By mid-August 2026, diplomatic efforts expanded to include Mexico. Mẫn met with Alberto Anaya Gutierrez, General Secretary of the Mexican Labour Party, to discuss enhancing coordination between the Vietnamese National Assembly and the Mexican Senate and Chamber of Deputies. On August 17, 2026, discussions further emphasized Mexico’s role as a leading Latin American trading partner for Vietnam. Beyond lawmaking and parliamentary committee activities, the two nations highlighted over 20 years of collaboration in traditional medicine and acupuncture. New agreements were signed to expand cooperation in medical training and expert exchange, building on the work of three Vietnamese acupuncture centers currently operating in Mexico City, Monterrey, and at the Autonomous University.
