Vietnam maritime incidents & rescue July 2026

Entities: China · Vietnam · Spratly Islands · Fiery Cross Reef (Yongshu Reef) · Khoi Nguyen 18

Overview

In early July 2026 a Vietnamese fishing boat (QN‑90568‑TS) capsized near the Cô Tô Special Zone in Quảng Ninh province. Six of the seven crew members were rescued after a prolonged search in stormy conditions, while the captain, Nguyễn Văn Thành, remained missing. Local authorities continued the search despite adverse weather.

The following week, on 25 July, the Vietnamese‑registered cargo vessel Khoi Nguyen 18 sank near Fiery Cross Reef (Yongshu Reef) in the disputed Spratly Islands. The ship was carrying 62 Vietnamese crew members. Chinese rescue forces from Hainan dispatched six vessels, a helicopter and a Vietnamese ship, while Vietnamese officials confirmed the loss occurred in bad weather. Initial reports listed 39 survivors; later updates raised the number rescued to 44‑45, leaving 17‑23 crew members still unaccounted for. The incident unfolded within an area claimed by China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei, underscoring both humanitarian cooperation and ongoing strategic tensions in the South China Sea.
