Vietnam prosecution of social media figures

Overview

Vietnamese authorities have intensified legal proceedings against high-profile social media figures, known locally as ‘giang hồ mạng’ or ‘internet gangsters,’ for violating public order, spreading false information, and engaging in criminal activities.

Recent enforcement actions include the prosecution of Nguyễn Văn Hợi (Khánh Sky), Hồ Văn Khoa, and Trần Đình Tiệp (Vua Quạt), as well as a residence search involving Bùi Xuân Huấn (Huấn Hoa Hồng). Investigations into Huấn Hoa Hồng have expanded to include charges related to fraud and serious accounting violations involving hundreds of billions of VND in unreported revenue.

Hanoi police have prosecuted Phạm Tuấn and nine others, including rapper CCMK, for the illegal production and distribution of violent content on the ‘Phạm Tuấn ENTERTAINMENT’ YouTube channel. The group allegedly uploaded videos depicting gang-related activities, school violence, and the use of weapons, generating hundreds of millions of VND in illicit profits.

Investigations have also expanded into fraudulent advertising. Nguyễn Thị Hương, known as ‘Cô Giáo Hương,’ was implicated in a scheme involving the product Loramen. Alongside influencers Phú Lê and Lã Thúy Kiều, the group allegedly used deceptive marketing to sell a topical solution as a male physiological enhancer, reportedly generating approximately 11.6 billion VND in revenue.

In Ho Chi Minh City, Lê Thị Hiểu, manager of the TikTok account ‘QuyHoi,’ was detained for spreading false information and insulting state officials and local leadership to increase social media engagement.
