Vietnam regional diplomatic engagement

Overview

Vietnam has engaged in a series of diplomatic efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and regional cooperation with its neighbors, Laos and Cambodia.

In late September 2026, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung met with Cambodian Minister of Inspection Sok Soken in Hanoi. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation between the two nations' inspection agencies, improving state management, and refining legal institutions. The meeting also noted a growth in bilateral trade, which reached 8.7 billion USD in the first eight months of 2026.

Following this, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung conducted an official visit to Laos and Cambodia from October 8 to 10, 2026. This trip, his first official overseas visit since assuming office, involved meetings with Laotian President Thongloun Sisoulith and Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith. The visit resulted in the exchange of 11 cooperation documents and the launch of the Laos-Vietnam Friendship University project, with a focus on maintaining political trust and expanding defense and investment sectors.
