Vietnam rice harvest tourism

Overview

The northern mountainous regions of Vietnam are experiencing their annual rice harvest season, characterized by landscapes turning golden as crops ripen. In Mu Cang Chai, the stepped terraces have drawn significant interest, with official figures reporting over 110,000 visitors in the first eight months of 2026, including nearly 17,000 international tourists. Similar ripening is noted in the Chieng Sinh valley of Dien Bien province.

This seasonal influx has led to tourist congestion in Mu Cang Chai. In the Mong Ngua Hill area of Vong Lua village, travelers reported being stuck in traffic for over two hours. Local authorities attributed the congestion to crowds gathering for sunsets and noted that the existing 3-meter-wide rural roads are insufficient for the volume of vehicles. Furthermore, a landslide has reduced a section of the road to Mong Ngua Hill to a single lane, prompting local officials to request funding for repairs.

As the season progresses, the terraced fields in Luc Hon and Mu Cang Chai continue to attract photographers and tourists. In Luc Hon, the 2026 Golden Harvest Festival is scheduled for October and November. The festivities include an art program on October 24 at the Luc Na communal house, a trekking and camping event at Cao Xiem Mountain on October 17, and a cultural showcase of local OCOP products and traditional crafts from the Tay, Dao, and San Chi ethnic groups between October 23 and 25. In Mu Cang Chai, Mam Xoi Hill remains a primary landmark for visitors seeking to capture the layered formations of the ripening rice.
