Vietnam UN peacekeeping mission deployments

Overview

Vietnamese peacekeeping personnel have begun deploying to various United Nations missions. The initial deployment includes 63 personnel from Level 2 Field Hospital No. 8 to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and 184 members of Engineering Unit No. 5 to the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). Vietnam is also contributing individual officers as military observers and staff officers to various missions and the United Nations Headquarters.

Regarding the deployment to the Abyei region, Deputy Minister of National Defense Nguyen Truong Thang presided over a farewell ceremony for Engineering Unit No. 5. He described the participation as an ‘honorable duty’ and noted that previous Vietnamese engineering units have earned ‘high praise’ from the UN and international colleagues. The unit is scheduled for a one-year term following the completion of specialized pre-deployment training.
