Vietnam women's economic and social empowerment initiatives

Overview

Social welfare and economic empowerment initiatives for women in Vietnam have expanded from localized aid to broader regional cooperation and digital skill development.

Initial efforts focused on the “Accompanying Border Women” program, a collaboration between the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour and the Vietnam Women's Union. Supported by the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam, this program provided scholarships and livelihood assistance, such as the “Garden-Pond-Livestock” production model, to disadvantaged families in border provinces like Lang Son and Long Son.

Subsequent developments show a shift toward cross-border cooperation and digital integration. In Dien Bien Province, the Women's Union signed a cooperation memorandum with a delegation from Laos for the 2026–2031 period. Domestically, efforts have moved toward entrepreneurship, including training for livestream selling on platforms like TikTok Shop and Shopee, as well as supporting women-led agricultural cooperatives in achieving higher OCOP status through digital commerce.
