Vietnamese authorities sanction dangerous TikTok livestreams

Overview

Vietnamese authorities have taken action against TikTok creators for livestreaming hazardous content to increase social media engagement and monetization.

In early August, police in Hưng Yên Province fined creator Vu Quang Huy 12.5 million VND for a livestream featuring a teenager riding a motorbike on one wheel without a helmet. The creator admitted to the act was intended to “câu view” or seek online attention.

Later in the month, Ho Chi Minh City police summoned Duong Hong Phuc, known as ‘Li Minh Ho Quan 7’, following a livestream where he performed a stunt involving sharp fragments on his thigh to compete in a ‘PK’ challenge. Phuc stated he performed the actions to convert virtual gifts into cash. Authorities have noted a rising trend of creators risking physical safety for social media monetization.
