Viktorie Plzeň coaching changes

Overview

Following a disappointing start to the season and a 5-5 draw against Teplice, Viktorie Plzeň chairman Adolf Šádek expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s performance and play style. Šádek addressed speculation regarding coach Martin Hyský’s position, clarifying that while owner Michal Strnad is involved in strategy, sporting decisions remain under Šádek’s authority.

Viktorie Plzeň has now officially appointed Radoslav Kováč as the new head coach, replacing Hyský. The decision was accelerated by a 0-3 defeat against Crvena Zvezda in the Europa League qualifying rounds. Kováč, a 46-year-old former Czech international, has signed a contract through the end of the current season with an option for two additional years. He will be supported by assistants David Mikula and Michal Hampl.

Kováč is set to make his debut in the Europa League play-off rematch against Crvena Zvezda, where the club must overturn a three-goal deficit. Despite the slim odds, Kováč expressed optimism, noting that he sees “great determination within the squad.”

Having had only a few days to prepare, Kováč stated he is focusing on listening to player feedback and making minor adjustments rather than a complete overhaul. His goal is to maintain the team’s existing quality while providing a “new competitive impulse” and scoring an early goal to energize the home crowd at the Doosan Arena.

As the rematch approaches, Crvena Zvezda coach Albert Rijera has indicated his team will not play defensively to protect their lead, stating they will approach the match as if the score were 0-0. Rijera has confirmed a 23-man squad for the trip to Czechia, noting potential tactical adjustments following the departure of Jung vu Seol. The return leg in the Czech Republic remains critical for Plzeň's attempt at a comeback.
