Violence against Mexican cargo transport operators
Overview
Transport organizations in Mexico are reporting an escalation in violence against cargo operators. The National Association of Transporters (ANTAC) has criticized existing federal security measures, such as the “Cero Robo al Transporte” plan and the “Balam” strategy, labeling them as “failed strategies” following the murder of an operator in September.
In response to the rising insecurity, ANTAC has proposed legislation to provide financial support for the widows of operators killed in the line of duty. Meanwhile, the National Chamber of Freight Transport (CANACAR) reports that 15 cargo transport operators have been murdered in Mexico so far in 2026.
While highway robberies have seen a slight decrease, CANACAR officials note that criminal activity has become more aggressive, with perpetrators targeting drivers directly rather than just the cargo. CANACAR estimates that a cargo truck is stolen every 50 minutes nationwide and is seeking to establish a direct communication channel with security authorities via C5 centers to improve response capabilities.
