Violence and security investigations in Osun State

Overview

Following reports of violence and killings at Naira and Kobo Junction in Ikire on August 24, 2026, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke established a coroner’s inquest. The panel, chaired by Magistrate Ayokunle Shiyanbola, was tasked with determining the number of victims, investigating the causes of the violence, and examining whether security operatives complied with legal rules of engagement.

Violence in the state continued into mid-September when Olalekan Oyeyemi, an associate of the Governor and member of the Accord Party, was shot dead during a dispute over motor park control at the Mayfair Garage in Ile-Ife. Reports indicate the confrontation involved Oyeyemi’s group and a rival faction led by individuals identified as Sibi and Nurudeen Alowonle. Oyeyemi, popularly known as ‘Emir Ajagungbade’, had previously faced legal challenges including charges related to terrorism and conspiracy.

In response to the shooting, Governor Adeleke ordered security agencies to arrest those responsible and restore order. He directed warring groups to vacate motor parks immediately and announced plans for an Executive Order to reintroduce a Park Management System to regulate garages and the transport sector.
