Violence and security unrest in Manipur
Overview
Violence in Manipur’s hill districts has resulted in significant casualties and the destruction of numerous villages. Former Chief Minister N Biren Singh reported that since February, violence has claimed approximately 58 lives and led to the burning of 40 to 50 villages.
To address the unrest, Singh proposed confining armed cadres under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement to designated camps for several months and conducting statewide security operations to recover unauthorized weapons. He also advocated for the resettlement of displaced persons and the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) to manage illegal immigration.
Following recent militant attacks in the Kangpokpi district, including the killings of two men in Makui Ashang village, Singh condemned the violence and urged communities to prioritize political dialogue and communal harmony over conflict.
