Violence at Colegio de Bachilleres campuses in Mexico
Overview
Violence at Colegio de Bachilleres (COBAC) campuses in Mexico has prompted increased security measures and emergency responses.
In Coahuila, following violent incidents at a secondary school in Torreón, COBAC reinforced security protocols. These measures include restricting campus access and conducting ‘operativos mochila’ (backpack checks) with the assistance of the State Civil Police and canine units. The institution is also collaborating with psychological and social organizations to address mental health and violence prevention.
In Mexico City, a group of hooded individuals, preliminarily identified as shock groups, attacked the Colegio de Bachilleres 6 campus ‘Vicente Guerrero’ in Iztapalapa on October 9. The attackers used firecrackers (cohetones) to cause chaos, resulting in broken glass, damaged furniture, and the destruction of parked vehicles. The attack caused panic and an evacuation, during which students were forced to seek shelter in the rear of the building.
Two individuals required medical attention on-site: a teacher sustained a contusion to the right parietal region of the head, and a woman suffered an anxiety crisis. While authorities have not confirmed a motive, reports suggest the intrusion may be linked to allegations of sexual abuse against a teacher at the institution.
The Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) issued a statement condemning the violence, asserting that ‘no violent act is justifiable in educational spaces’ and urging the resolution of conflicts through institutional and legal channels. Following the incident, school authorities suspended afternoon classes to assess damages, while the Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) deployed personnel to secure the premises.
