Violence during IJsselmeervogels and GVVV football match

Overview

A violent incident occurred during a Dutch third division football match between IJsselmeervogels and GVVV, leading to the abandonment of the game at halftime. During the break in the player tunnel, IJsselmeervogels player Quiermo Dumay was assaulted. Reports indicate Dumay suffered significant injuries, including seven broken and three displaced teeth, requiring medical attention from a jaw surgeon. He is expected to be sidelined for at least six weeks.

While IJsselmeervogels officials identified GVVV assistant coach Jhon van Beukering as the assailant, Van Beukering claimed he acted in self-defense against a group of people. In a subsequent interview, Van Beukering admitted to the outburst, stating, ‘I admit that I lashed out. But I do not know whom I hit.’ Local coach Willem Leushuis described the attack as having the intensity of a ‘street fighter.’

In the aftermath, GVVV dismissed and suspended both head coach Dennis van Beukering and assistant coach Jhon van Beukering, stating that physical violence is contrary to the club’s values. The incident also caused unrest among supporters, necessitating police intervention to separate fans.

The KNVB has since issued a 60-day suspension to Jhon van Beukering. This suspension also prevents him from performing his duties as head coach at the amateur club SC Veluwezoom. Formal investigations by both the police and the KNVB remain ongoing.
