Violent crime across Latin America

Overview

Violent criminal activity and interpersonal violence continue to be reported across Latin America, involving firearms, edged weapons, and attacks on both civilians and officials.

In Argentina, an 18-year-old student was shot in the abdomen and arm by a 17-year-old classmate inside a bathroom at Escuela N° 58 in Villa Dorrego, La Matanza. Teachers transported the victim to Hospital Simplemente Evita in a private vehicle for emergency surgery prior to police arrival. Authorities seized a .22 caliber Bersa pistol discarded by the perpetrator. Before surgery, the victim reportedly told nursing staff the shooting was an accident, claiming a friend was showing him the weapon when the shots “went off,” though this version has not been officially corroborated. The victim’s mother has since confirmed he is out of danger following surgery. The suspect remains in custody, and Prosecutor Marcelo Germinario is investigating how the firearm bypassed institutional controls through the Juvenile Criminal Responsibility Prosecutor's Office No. 2 of La Matanza. The incident has caused significant shock in the local community, particularly following a similar, non-injury incident involving a firearm at another school in the same area in September.

Legal developments have also emerged regarding a 2022 homicide. Two teenagers were sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Juzgado de Responsabilidad Penal Juvenil 1 of San Isidro for the murder of businessman Andrés Blaquier. The crime occurred on the Panamericana highway near Pilar, where Blaquier was shot in the chest during a robbery involving a stolen motorcycle. The victim’s family expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling, noting that 15 years is the maximum penalty allowed under the current juvenile criminal regime.
