Violent crime and gangland activity in Sydney

Overview

Sydney has experienced a series of violent criminal incidents, beginning with multiple stabbings and a targeted home invasion. In early September, police investigated an altercation outside a kebab shop in Canterbury that left three men hospitalized, a critical stabbing in Bidwill where a group allegedly interfered with the investigation, and a home invasion in Guildford West involving the assault of two people. A separate stabbing in Five Dock was reportedly linked to a debt collection attempt.

By mid-September, the violence in Western Sydney escalated into a surge of gangland-related shootings. Three individuals were killed in separate incidents: Louis Meehan in Punchbowl, a shooting believed to be linked to organized crime involving the Alameddine gang and the Coconut Cartel; Marco Tapia in Glen Alpine; and Joshua Macdonald in Merrylands West. Local residents and funeral workers have expressed concern regarding the perceived lawlessness of these attacks.
