Violent crime incidents in Japan

Overview

In early August 2026, Japan reported two separate attempted murder incidents. In Kagoshima, a 44-year-old Vietnamese national was arrested for allegedly stabbing a male coworker with a knife-like object while drinking. Concurrently, in Hakodate, an unemployed man was apprehended after attacking a 16-year-old girl with a mechanical pencil in a store.

By mid-August, Osaka Prefectural Police arrested two Vietnamese nationals, Lao Nhat Tam and Le Thi Khanh Linh, for an attempted robbery and murder that occurred in June at the Abechika underground shopping mall. The suspects allegedly stabbed a 31-year-old woman before stealing approximately 220,000 yen. Investigators are examining whether the suspects are linked to ‘Tokuryu,’ described as ‘anonymous and highly mobile criminal groups,’ as they continue to search for other potential accomplices.
