Violent machete attacks in Grand-Yoff
Overview
A series of violent machete attacks have occurred in the Grand-Yoff area of Senegal.
In early September, a 30-year-old man identified as A. Maréna, nicknamed ‘Borom Darou’, was arrested for a machete attack on a 26-year-old mechanic. The suspect reportedly confessed to the attack, claiming he was responding to insults, and faces charges of attempted murder.
In early October, two men, Cheikh Bop and Soudou Faye, were taken into custody following a violent assault on a 14-year-old boy. The minor was allegedly targeted after being falsely accused of stealing a mobile phone. The victim sustained a skull fracture and loss of mobility in his limbs. While the suspects admitted to the attack, they attempted to minimize the severity of the injuries and attributed the use of the machete to another individual who remains at large. The suspects are also being held for attempted murder.
