Entities: Virgin Atlantic · Heathrow Airport · Georgie Buxton · Boeing 787 Dreamliner · Lydia Brown
Overview
On 11 June 2026 a 23‑year‑old Virgin Atlantic aircraft engineer, Georgie Buxton, was injured while performing maintenance on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner at London Heathrow Airport. A piece of machinery collapsed and struck him, causing severe head trauma and crushing him inside the aircraft’s fuel tank.
Buxton was taken to St Mary’s Hospital and remained in intensive care for several weeks. Despite multiple surgeries, he died on 7 July 2026. Virgin Atlantic issued statements expressing grief, pledging support to his family, and emphasizing a commitment to safety and employee wellbeing.
The Metropolitan Police Aviation Policing Unit, in partnership with the UK Health and Safety Executive, opened a joint criminal investigation. A senior coroner opened an inquest, which was suspended pending the police inquiry. The investigation also involves Boeing as the aircraft manufacturer. An inquest is scheduled to be held at West London Coroner’s Court.
