Visual impairment inclusion initiatives in Italy
Overview
New programs have been launched across Italy to improve support and inclusion for visually impaired individuals, particularly youth and students.
In Bologna, an initiative was introduced to help parish youth centers better accommodate visually impaired young people. This project, prompted by the Italian Union of the Blind and Partially Sighted (Uici), focuses on training community managers to overcome technical uncertainties and social fears. Mario Barbuto, national president of Uici, noted the goal is to transform these social hubs into inclusive spaces.
Further training efforts are expanding into specialized professional sectors. In Taranto, an 80-hour course will begin in November 2026, covering Braille literacy, logical-mathematical education, and assistive information technology for school integration. Simultaneously, in the Piedmont region, training sessions titled ‘Visual disability between clinic, psychology, and care practice’ will address psychological aspects, rehabilitation, and mobility tools such as guide dogs and white canes.
