Vojvodina Hungarian political disputes
Overview
Political tensions have escalated between the Democratic Community of Vojvodina Hungarians (DZVM) and the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (SVM) regarding political conduct and electoral legitimacy.
Initially, the DZVM criticized the SVM and Assembly President Balint Juhas for ‘bringing politics into school’ during a student reception in Bačka Biroš. The DZVM also expressed concerns that SVM’s potential cooperation with nationalist groups and the Serbian Progressive Party did not serve the interests of the Hungarian minority.
As extraordinary parliamentary elections in Serbia approach, the SVM released a 12-point election program focusing on demographic decline, youth emigration, and minority rights. Concurrently, the DZVM has formally challenged the Republic Electoral Commission (RIK) regarding the SVM’s status. The DZVM is questioning the RIK’s designation of the ‘Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians – Dr. Bálint Pastor’ list as a national minority list, alleging that the list contains candidates residing in Belgrade or belonging to the majority ethnic group.
