Volkswagen and JSW Group automotive partnership negotiations

Overview

Negotiations between Volkswagen Group and India’s JSW Group have reached an advanced stage regarding the sale of a 51 percent majority stake in Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd (SAVWIPL). This proposed deal would grant JSW Group operational control of the subsidiary.

The partnership is centered on accelerating electric vehicle (EV) development through the India Main Platform (IMP), an electric architecture derived from China’s CMP platform and designed specifically for the Indian market. The platform is expected to support various electric SUV models under both the Volkswagen and Škoda brands. This collaboration follows group-wide cost-cutting measures that reduced the local EV platform development budget from $1 billion to approximately $700 million.

Recent reports indicate that a non-binding memorandum of understanding could be signed as early as October, following high-level management meetings in Mumbai. The joint venture is expected to utilize manufacturing facilities, potentially including a new JSW Motors plant in Maharashtra located near existing Škoda operations. If a memorandum is signed, the formal establishment of the joint venture is anticipated between late 2026 and 2027.
