Voyeurism arrests in Japan

Overview

Reports of voyeurism and unauthorized filming have emerged in different regions of Japan.

In late August, a 24-year-old office worker in Tokyo was arrested for allegedly attempting to film a woman in a Shinagawa Ward restroom using a smartphone. The suspect admitted to the allegations, noting that despite participating in online counseling for voyeuristic tendencies, he could not control his impulses.

In mid-September, two separate arrests occurred at JR Yotsukaido Station in Chiba Prefecture within a five-minute period. Police apprehended a 32-year-old teacher for allegedly filming a high school girl on a staircase, and a 34-year-old man for a similar offense involving a student on an escalator. Authorities noted that Yotsukaido Station has recorded at least seven incidents of voyeurism or attempted voyeurism since 2021.
