Waste management and environmental concerns in South America

Overview

In Argentina, residents have petitioned the Ombudsman, Dr. Sebastián Baltanas, regarding the Centro Ambiental de Residuos Sólidos Urbanos. The group, providing over one hundred signatures, expressed concerns over potential contamination and fire risks at the facility on National Route 40.

Petitioners are requesting independent water analysis of the Calfuco stream and the leachate pond, a formal environmental monitoring plan, and the closure and remediation of a specific cell as previously ordered by local ordinances. They are also calling for the resumption of provincial oversight and the publication of overdue semi-annual reports.

In Uruguay, the Intendencia de Canelones issued a formal apology to a resident after video footage showed a waste collector deliberately throwing trash in front of a private residence near Atlántida. The municipality has since conducted an immediate cleaning of the area and launched an internal administrative investigation to determine disciplinary responsibilities.
