Waste management and illegal dumping in Skopje
Overview
Waste management efforts in Skopje have focused on addressing illegal dumping and maintaining public cleanliness. In mid-August, municipal teams reported the removal of 675 cubic meters of illegally dumped bulky and construction waste across various municipalities, with the Chair Municipality seeing the highest volume. During this period, the municipal eco-patrol issued 28 reports for violations of the Law on Public Cleanliness.
By mid-September, the situation escalated into a crisis in the Vardar Gorge, where illegal mini-dumps appeared along roads and green spaces, accompanied by the smell of burning waste. In response, the Karposh Municipality and the City of Skopje conducted a six-week cleaning operation that resulted in over 50 fines. To deter future illegal disposal, the City of Skopje has proposed installing 30 surveillance cameras to monitor public infrastructure.
