Wastewater management and regulation in Haaglanden

In the Haaglanden region of the Netherlands, authorities are addressing industrial wastewater and management structures. Omgevingsdienst Haaglanden has launched an investigation into indirect industrial wastewater discharges to track how substances enter the water cycle through the sewage system. This initiative involves collecting data from approximately 160 companies and testing samples from 20 businesses to ensure compliance with the European Water Framework Directive and regional water quality standards due by December 2027.

Concurrently, the Delfland Water Authority (Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland) has announced plans to terminate its contract with Delfluent BV for the Harnaschpolder and Houtrust wastewater treatment plants. The authority intends to take direct control of these operations by establishing a wholly-owned private limited company. This restructuring is expected to save millions of euros and allow for better adaptation to future developments, with the authority stating that employees will transfer under current conditions to ensure no interruption in services.
