Water and sanitation agency developments in Latin America

Water and sanitation agencies in Mexico and the Dominican Republic have marked institutional anniversaries, highlighting infrastructure developments and increased investment.

In Mexico, the Decentralized Public Body for the Provision of Drinking Water, Sewerage, and Sanitation (OPDAPAS) in Zinacantepec celebrated 30 years of service. Director Iván Saucedo Sánchez reported significant hydraulic infrastructure work, including the maintenance of over 135 kilometers of infrastructure and the addition of potable water and sanitary drainage networks between 2022 and 2024.

In the Dominican Republic, the National Institute of Potable Water and Sewerage (INAPA) commemorated its 64th anniversary. Executive Director Wellington Arnaud noted that current investments in the water sector are five times higher than in previous administrations under President Luis Abinader. Arnaud highlighted the country’s recognition by the Organization of American States (OAS) as a regional leader, citing the Gurabo stream sanitation project and the Universal Sanitation Program for Tourist and Coastal Cities as key initiatives to address social debt in water and sanitation infrastructure.
