Water shortages in Nikšić and Župa Nikšićka
Overview
Nikšić and the surrounding Župa Nikšićka region are facing severe water shortages driven by extreme heat and a prolonged lack of precipitation.
In Nikšić, water supply restrictions were originally introduced on August 25 due to unfavorable hydrological conditions and reduced source yields. Since early September, the Nikšić Waterworks has implemented a tightened restrictive regime. Water outages are organized in two groups of settlements on an alternating eight-hour schedule, which can result in residents facing up to 16 hours without water in a 24-hour period.
These interruptions have impacted public services, leading the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation to announce shortened class hours for schools in suburban settlements. The Ministry noted that shortages pose challenges for maintaining hygiene and school facility operations. Authorities continue to prioritize vital institutions, such as healthcare facilities, though the duration of these restrictions remains unpredictable and depends on meteorological developments and improved water inflow.
In the rural Zagrad region of Župa Nikšićka, the drought has left the local water infrastructure completely dry for several months. During this period, the Botanac spring has remained a critical source of water for the area.
