Weapon theft and arrests at Secunderabad military facility

Overview

A major security breach occurred at the Madras Regiment facility in the Secunderabad Cantonment, Telangana, where a cache of military weapons and ammunition was stolen. The theft, discovered on August 31, involved the breaking of locks on weapons storage rooms and ammunition boxes. Stolen items included AK-203 or AK-47 assault rifles, an INSAS rifle, six to seven pistols, 21 magazines, night vision equipment, and approximately 1,912 rounds of ammunition.

During searches related to the theft, Army personnel discovered 160 commercial electric detonators, valued at approximately Rs 32,000, in a light-green plastic bucket. These were found on private land near Golf Enclave, located behind the rear boundary wall of the regiment’s firing range. The Bollarum police registered a case under the Explosive Substances Act, and bomb disposal squads were deployed to secure the site.

Following a coordinated operation involving Military Intelligence and the Telangana Police Task Force, four suspects have been arrested. Investigators suspect a retired Army officer may have orchestrated the heist due to a personal grudge against a former commanding officer. One of the detainees is reportedly an active army person. A significant portion of the stolen arsenal has been recovered in the Nagarkurnool district, and authorities are currently verifying the items against official inventory records.
