Weather patterns and precipitation in India
Overview
Weather patterns across various Indian regions have been characterized by significant precipitation and temperature shifts.
In late September, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued alerts for the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra and parts of Chhattisgarh, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and strong wind gusts. In Raipur, high humidity and heavy drizzle were expected alongside stormy weather.
By mid-October, weather activity shifted toward Madhya Pradesh. Despite the official departure of the southwest monsoon on October 3, active western disturbances and cyclonic circulation have maintained rainfall and thunderstorms across several divisions, including Gwalior, Chambal, and Sagar. This period has also seen a decline in nighttime temperatures, with several cities recording lows below 18 degrees Celsius.
As of mid-October, the IMD has extended alerts for Madhya Pradesh, specifically targeting the Gwalior, Sheopur, Bhind, Morena, and Shivpuri districts. Precipitation is expected to continue through October 19 in several other areas, including Datia, Guna, and Panna. Cooling trends persist, with Amarkantak recording a minimum of 15.8 degrees Celsius.
Broadening across the country, the IMD has issued warnings for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and high-speed winds—potentially reaching 70 to 80 kilometers per hour—across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. These conditions include risks of lightning and hail. Additionally, snowfall has been predicted for northern mountainous regions such as Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh, bringing risks of landslides.
