Werner Herzog film festival recognition and new release

German director Werner Herzog is receiving significant recognition at major film festivals. In August, it was announced that the 84-year-old filmmaker would be honored with the Donostia Prize at the 74th San Sebastián Film Festival.

Following this announcement, Herzog’s latest feature film, ‘Bucking Fastard’, premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Marking his first fiction project in seven years, the film serves as a tribute to the late David Lynch. The story follows monozygotic twins Jean and Joan Holbrooke in rural Ireland, inspired by the real-life experiences of Freda and Greta Chaplin. The narrative explores the intense symbiosis of two inseparable women who share movements, thoughts, and romantic interests, rooted in historical events from the 1980s.

The premiere was met with a nearly seven-minute standing ovation, leaving Herzog visibly emotional. The production features Rooney Mara and Kate Mara, who play the twins, alongside Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson. The plot involves legal complications arising from the sisters' extreme connection and a subsequent search for a utopian existence in the Orkneys.

Critical reception remains mixed. While some reviewers highlighted the unique chemistry between the Mara sisters and the film's eccentric nature, others described the work as an “aimless showcase of oddity.” During the festival, Herzog noted that he “makes no distinction between fiction and documentary,” while the Mara sisters described the process of synchronizing their performances as being “akin to singing together.”
