Wero payment method expansion in European retail

The European real-time payment solution Wero is expanding its integration across various retail sectors in Germany and Austria.

In late August 2026, the German drugstore chain dm integrated Wero into its online shop via the service provider Nexi Germany. This followed previous adoptions by retailers such as Lidl, BAUR, and Quelle. Wero allows for real-time, account-to-account transactions through participating banks without requiring credit cards.

By mid-September 2026, the rollout moved into stationary retail. Berlin-based ZIIB integrated Wero into its ‘Pay with ME’ platform, making the service available at over 11,000 points of sale across Germany and Austria. This implementation specifically targets vending machines, farm shops, and self-service car washes, with future plans to expand into parking systems, canteens, and gastronomy services.
