West African anti-corruption asset declaration efforts

West African nations are implementing measures to increase public accountability through asset declaration mandates.

In Gambia, Justice Minister Moussa Sarr has called for immediate compliance with asset declaration requirements following a July 31, 2026, deadline. Under law n° 2025-13, officials must declare assets at the start, during, and end of public service to prevent corruption. The Office of the Fight Against Corruption (OFNAC) is moving toward a verification phase, noting that only 558 of 1,594 obligated individuals had submitted declarations by July.

In Liberia, the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) announced that public officials will be required to redeclare assets next year. The commission reported high compliance under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, with over 3,000 declarations filed. LACC Executive Chairperson Cllr. Alexandra Zoe noted that the agency has gained direct prosecutorial powers under the 2022 amended and restated Act, though she emphasized the need for specialized courts to adjudicate corruption cases efficiently.
