West African football league developments

Overview

Football associations in West Africa have announced different schedules and administrative updates for their upcoming domestic seasons.

In Sierra Leone, the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) and Premier League Boards have finalized the 2026/27 Men’s and Women’s league fixtures using a digitalized ‘Connect System’. The season is set to begin on October 10, 2026, preceded by the 2026 Unity Cup on October 4. The SLFA is implementing technological upgrades, including a new development app and a move toward paperless administration via the SLFA Connect portal.

In Senegal, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has postponed the start of the professional Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 championships from October 3 to October 17, 2026. The FSF Emergency Committee cited the need to provide ‘optimal conditions’ for players preparing for various national team international commitments. The delay also follows requests from clubs such as Jaraaf de Dakar, AS Pikine, and Sonacos to allow more time for player registration and resolving FIFA recruitment bans.
