Overview
In late July 2026, the West African Society of Physics announced that its eighth international congress would be held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from 29 July to 1 August. The conference was framed around the theme “Supporting access to energy, sustainable agriculture and food security through applied physics,” and organizers outlined a program covering renewable‑energy physics, precision agriculture, water management, industrial innovation, digital tools and AI.
A few days later the congress opened on 29 July at the University Joseph Ki‑Zerbo. The opening ceremony was led by Minister Makaïlou Sidibé and senior officials from the construction, higher‑education and agriculture ministries. Delegates from across West Africa and beyond attended, and participants discussed the role of physics in the region’s energy and food‑security challenges. The event concluded with a declaration aimed at guiding the promotion of applied physics in West Africa.
