West African sports development initiatives

Overview

Sports organizations in Sierra Leone and Ghana are implementing various regional and gender-focused development programs.

In Sierra Leone, the Football Association (SLFA) has initiated the FIFA Arena Project, a pilot program involving the construction of mini-pitches at Bo School and Albert Academy Secondary School to support grassroots football. Additionally, the Sierra Leone Boxing Association (SLBA) has begun decentralizing boxing training by donating equipment to the Southern and Eastern regions and conducting coach training sessions.

Efforts to advance women’s sports have also emerged. The SLFA launched a four-year Women’s Football Strategy to expand opportunities for women and girls, supported by FIFA-led capacity-building workshops. Similarly, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is reviewing its existing frameworks to prepare a new Women’s Football Strategy for the 2027–2031 period, building upon previous initiatives like the U15 Regional Girls Colts League.
