West Bank arrests over Hamas incitement

Overview

In early July 2026, Israeli authorities detained two Palestinians in the West Bank for praising the Oct 7 massacre and encouraging further attacks. The arrests marked a crackdown on online and public incitement linked to Hamas.

By early August, the security sweep expanded. Israeli police, together with the IDF and Border Police, arrested a 39‑year‑old suspect in Jericho for publishing pro‑Hamas messages and calling for attacks on Israel. The individual was connected to the Muslim Brotherhood in northern Gaza and was transferred to a police station in Ma’aleh Adumim for questioning. In the same period, an IDF reconnaissance soldier on leave was also taken into custody after he intervened in a shepherd‑attack incident near Alon Road, awaiting IDF forces without firing his weapon. Human‑rights group Honenu criticized the soldier’s arrest, arguing he acted to protect civilians.

These successive detentions illustrate a broader Israeli effort to suppress Hamas‑related incitement and related activities in the occupied West Bank, targeting both Palestinian civilians and an Israeli soldier involved in a related incident.
