West Sumatra flood response continues

Heavy rain in late July 2026 caused the Batang Tumayo River in Agam Regency to overflow, prompting the evacuation of about 450 residents and a multi‑agency rescue effort that reported no fatalities. By early August, the governor inspected damage in Padang and ordered the provincial construction and water‑resources agency to deploy heavy machinery to restore river flow and reopen blocked roads, while agencies continued to provide basic needs and monitor further rain.

On 3 August, renewed downpours produced widespread flooding across at least 15 locations in Padang, inundating homes, roads and public facilities. Governor Mahyeldi Ansharullah reiterated the deployment of heavy equipment to clear the river and repair infrastructure, urging swift action from all relevant agencies. Mayor Fadly Amran reported that 92 schools—from kindergartens to junior high—were flooded and pledged that cleaning and repairs would be completed within two days so classes could resume. Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Sumatra delivered 100 food and essential kits to families in the Kuranji, Air Pacah and Koto Tangah neighborhoods, coordinating the aid with local authorities. The response remains focused on infrastructure restoration, humanitarian assistance and ongoing monitoring of weather conditions.
