White-nosed coati births at Plzeň Zoo

Overview

The Plzeň Zoo in the Czech Republic reported the birth of white-nosed coati triplets, an event occurring on June 22. This marks the first time in the zoo’s modern history that offspring of this species have been successfully raised.

The parent animals, a male from Zoo Magdeburg in Germany and a female from Vienna, arrived at the zoo last autumn. The white-nosed coatis were introduced to replace red coatis, which were phased out following their classification on an EU list of non-native and invasive species.

While the new species enclosure is still under construction, the infants are being cared for near the red panda exhibit. Once the triplets become more proficient at climbing, they will be moved to their permanent habitat, which features a large oak tree.
