Wicknell Chivayo legal and financial disputes

Overview

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo has been the subject of intense legal and financial scrutiny. Initially, Chivayo entered a high-profile legal battle with his first wife, Sonja Louise Madzikanda, regarding the division of assets, including luxury vehicles and properties in Zimbabwe and South Africa. The High Court approved a settlement involving approximately US$5 million intended for child maintenance and investment.

Following these legal proceedings, reports emerged regarding significant unpaid debts owed to various suppliers. Car dealers in Harare have reported millions of dollars in unsettled balances for luxury vehicles provided under deferred-payment arrangements. These unpaid obligations extend to promised gifts for the Zimbabwe Republic Police, members of the Johane Masowe church, and musical groups.

Following the death of Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, in a helicopter crash on September 30, 2026, his estate has faced heightened scrutiny. On October 23, 2026, a custom-built Rolls-Royce Phantom arrived in Harare. While some creditors have disputed the exact amounts owed, three Harare-based dealerships—Faramatsi Motors, Exquisite Cars, and Enterprise Car Sales—are reportedly owed a combined $5.1 million for vehicles supplied on credit.

The financial situation has prompted intervention from Prophet Uebert Angel, a Zimbabwean preacher and presidential envoy, who has offered to help settle some alleged debts if creditors can provide proof of claims “beyond reasonable doubt.” Additionally, leaked private messages purportedly from Chivayo suggest he claimed to have spent over US$200 million on gifts and charity, a figure significantly higher than previous estimates of US$30 million.
