Wild boar encounters in Greek residential areas
Overview
Wild boar sightings and intrusions in residential areas of Greece have caused increasing concern for public safety.
In Thessaloniki, a group of minors was surrounded by a pack of wild boars in a park in the Sykia area. The teenagers had to contact emergency services after finding themselves unable to escape the animals. Although police arrived quickly, the youths were initially difficult to reach via phone before being located and moved to safety.
This incident follows a series of increasing reports in the Sykia region, where animals have been appearing on residential streets near apartment buildings. Simos Daniilidis, the Mayor of Nea Poleis-Sykies, has called for state intervention, describing the situation for residents living near the Seih Sou area as “Russian roulette” and noting that the community also faces risks from wolves.
In Evia, a family in the Rovies area narrowly avoided contact with nine wild boars that entered their fenced property while a woman was holding a 30-day-old infant. While no injuries were reported, the family noted this was the fifth time in recent days that animals had entered the premises. Residents in both regions have called for immediate authority intervention to manage the presence of wildlife in inhabited areas.
