Wildfire evacuations in Canada and the United States
Overview
In early August 2026, the Fraser Valley Regional District downgraded evacuation orders to alerts for several areas near Boston Bar, including North Bend and Nahatlatch, due to the Brunswick Complex wildfires. While some residents were permitted to return home, 46 properties in Hells Gate, Spuzzum, and Sawmill Creek remained under evacuation orders. During this period, Highway 1 experienced a 63.5-km closure, and a boil-water advisory was in effect for FVRD-served water users.
By mid-August, authorities in British Columbia and Ontario, as well as parts of the United States, began rescinding various wildfire-related evacuation orders and alerts. In British Columbia, the Tŝideldel First Nation and Cariboo Regional District lifted orders for the Palmer Creek Fire area. In Ontario, the alert for the area surrounding the Fort Frances 39 and Minnesota’s ‘Thumb Fire’ was also lifted, as officials determined public safety was no longer the primary concern for those specific incidents.
