Wildfire prevention measures in Italy

Overview

Due to prolonged drought, intense heatwaves, and high wildfire risks, several Italian municipalities have implemented strict fire prevention measures.

Initially, the Mayor of Varenna, Mauro Manzoni, issued an ordinance prohibiting all types of fires—including cleaning fires and bonfires—as well as fireworks, flying lanterns, and other ignition devices. Authorities advised caution with gas stoves and candles, noting that local police would monitor compliance.

As the risk persisted, restrictions expanded to other regions. In Lusiana Conco, Mayor Antonella Corradin banned all outdoor fires, including barbecues and gas stoves, even in equipped areas. In Lombardy, municipalities such as Brembate di Sopra and Piario cancelled scheduled pyrotechnic displays for the August 15 Ferragosto holiday following an orange alert for forest fire risk issued by Civil Protection and regional authorities. Similar restrictions were also applied in Leffe and Spirano to protect public safety and environmental heritage.
