Wildfire response and management in Galicia

Overview

Wildfire response efforts in Galicia and the broader European region have seen increased technical and personnel deployment. In July, specialists from Galicia’s Consellería do Medio Rural participated in the European Union’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) to manage wildfire emergencies in Madrid and Castilla y León, while also conducting analyses for fires in France, Greece, and Portugal.

To strengthen regional capabilities, the Xunta de Galicia has reinforced its firefighting force, utilizing over 3,000 direct professionals and 280 contractors, with a total force exceeding 7,000 people when including various administrative levels. The aerial response has been bolstered by 24 aircraft, including 15 helicopters and nine planes. Regional authorities have opted not to set a fixed staff-to-hectare ratio, stating that operations must remain “dynamic” to allow resources to move fluidly between districts based on immediate needs.
