Expanding climate emergencies and wildfires in Bolivia

Overview

Wildfires have caused significant damage and logistical challenges in Bolivia, particularly in the Tarija and Cochabamba regions. Initial reports indicated simultaneous blazes in Tarija neighborhoods and the destruction of a warehouse containing confiscated wood, while forest fires in Mizque, Cochabamba, affected approximately 2,500 hectares. High temperatures and strong winds initially hindered containment efforts.

As the situation progressed, firefighting efforts in the Calderilla Chica community faced difficulties due to steep terrain, requiring personnel to trek four hours to reach active fronts. Alongside the fires, the Departmental Federation of Peasants of Tarija declared a state of emergency due to a critical shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in rural communities.

The crisis has expanded into multiple regional emergencies. The Vice Ministry of Civil Defense reported that Chuquisaca, Potosí, Tarija, and Oruro have declared states of emergency due to a combination of forest fires, droughts, river overflows, and snowfalls. In Chuquisaca, a man-made fire in the Fancesa sector affected 15 hectares, reportedly caused by individuals attempting to burn trash or pasture. This blaze spread rapidly due to wind, coming within 400 meters of urban areas. Authorities utilized drones, water tankers, and personnel from the police, military, and fire departments to control the situation.

Additionally, Santa Cruz has issued an emergency declaration as officials assess technical details regarding river overflows. The central government is coordinating response efforts with the Armed Forces and local governments.
