Wildlife and livestock smuggling in Vietnam

Overview

Authorities in Vietnam have conducted several operations to intercept illegal shipments of animals and food products crossing the border from China.

In Cao Bang province, border guards at the Tra Linh International Border Gate seized 299 kg of piglets being smuggled by three women. In Lao Cai province, officials dismantled bird traps used for capturing migratory species and initiated legal proceedings against an individual for violating endangered animal protection regulations.

Further enforcement in Lao Cai province targeted an organized smuggling ring operating through the Lao Cai International Border Gate. Authorities intercepted 60 kg of undocumented chicken eggs and later uncovered an additional 641 kg of illegal eggs at a local warehouse. Suspects involved in the operation admitted to being hired to disguise goods in personal items to bypass customs, reportedly earning approximately 17,000 VND per kilogram.
