Wildlife management crisis in Madonie Regional Park
Overview
The Madonie Regional Park in Sicily is facing significant ecological and safety challenges due to rising wildlife populations. Initially, the Madonie Park Council unanimously requested a state of emergency from the President of the Sicilian Region to address the proliferation of wild boars and jackals. Officials cited concerns regarding ecosystem protection, agricultural damage, public health, and general safety.
As the situation progressed, the scope of the biodiversity threat expanded to include growing populations of roe deer. WWF Sicilia Nord Occidentale has called for containment plans based on scientific criteria to protect forest regeneration and agricultural activities, noting that previous management efforts were insufficient. Proposed strategies include selective culling or non-lethal capture methods, contingent upon the availability of specialized personnel and economic resources. The Park Authority continues to seek a state of emergency to manage these various wildlife threats and restore the territory’s natural balance.
