Wildlife seizures and environmental enforcement in Brazil

Overview

Law enforcement agencies across Brazil have conducted multiple operations targeting environmental crimes and illegal wildlife captivity. In the Greater São Paulo area and Vespasiano, authorities rescued dozens of wild animals, including birds, tortoises, macaws, and iguanas, following reports of illegal sales and unauthorized captivity.

In the state of Alagoas, the Military Police Environmental Battalion (BPA) has intensified its efforts through various inspections. Operations such as ‘Onda Verde’, ‘Lagoa Segura’, ‘Fronteira Marítima’, and ‘Curupira’ targeted environmental crimes and illegal firearms. Between October 9 and 11, 2026, authorities in Cajueiro seized 76 wild birds, including canaries and curiós, while inspections in Maceió street markets led to the seizure of 14 birds. Enforcement actions in Atalaia, Branquinha, and Joaquim Gomes also resulted in the recovery of shotguns, ammunition, traps, and communication radios, as well as animal carcasses including wild pigs and agoutis.

Expanding these efforts, the sixth phase of ‘Operation Protetor dos Biomas’ in Alagoas resulted in the seizure of 442 wild animals, such as birds and tortoises, across five municipalities. These animals were transferred to the Ibama Wildlife Triage Center (Cetas) for veterinary evaluation. Additionally, in Niterói, a 2.24-meter-long yellow-spotted caiman was rescued from a storm drain by Inea and the Serra da Tiririca State Park and subsequently released into the Camboatá Canal.
