Wildlife trafficking interceptions in Mexico

Overview

Authorities in Mexico have intercepted multiple attempts to illegally transport protected wildlife via passenger buses.

In early September, federal agents in Chiapas seized 1,800 sea turtle eggs following an anonymous tip. The eggs, found in cardboard boxes on a bus traveling from Oaxaca, were transferred to a protection camp after an individual was detained by the Attorney General's Office.

Later in the month, authorities in Chihuahua intercepted a shipment of 95 protected animals on Federal Highway 45. The seizure included 75 red-legged tarantulas and 20 Mexican mud turtles, which were found in poor physical condition. Two individuals were detained by the National Guard, and the animals were moved to a veterinary clinic for medical attention.
