Opposition to wind energy development in Canada has escalated from calls for regulatory reform to organized mass protests. Initially, the PCENY collective advocated for increased transparency and the use of municipal referendums to establish the social acceptability of projects, particularly those on agricultural lands near residential areas. This movement expanded into a broader mobilization led by the Regroupement vigilance énergie Québec (RVÉQ). Demonstrators from various regions, including Bas-Saint-Laurent, Montérégie, and Lanaudière, gathered in Quebec City to demand a moratorium on wind energy development. These protesters are calling for sectoral or regional environmental assessments to prevent exceeding the environment’s carrying capacity and are demanding an end to territory appropriation without local consent.
